Chapter Sixteen

-Owen-

The second I see Liam talking to Simon, my dragon flies into a rage.

I can't even begin to imagine why. It can’t be jealousy. It was ridiculous with Shane, and it’s even more ridiculous with Liam, considering the relationship he and I have. Or had. I'm not exactly sure where we stand now. But I know he's not going to cut in on my territory.

And that's another thing. Simon isn’t my territory. At least not yet. But my dragon sure as hell thinks he is.

I know I should ignore it and stay with the kids. I was having a great time before this. Better than I have in a while, actually. But Cara is distracted playing with her friends, Shane’s gone back to manning the grill, and nobody's going to miss me if I walk over to where Simon and Liam are.

It's justification enough for my human side, and my dragon promptly shoves me over there.

Liam immediately catches my eye, likely hearing me even before I reach them. His senses have always been finely tuned, and he's a pretty intuitive bastard, to begin with. No doubt he knows exactly what my dragon is thinking and feeling, even if I can't.

"Quite the show you put on, Owen," he says, and there's a bit of wariness in his tone.

"Well, you know me. Always good for some entertainment."

Liam fixes me with a sad smile, and I wonder just what he said to Simon. If it wasn't what my dragon suspects—and I know it wasn't—then maybe he was trying to discourage Simon from interacting with me any more than he has to. Maybe he considers me volatile. Dangerous.

But even as I think it, I know that's just a bit of insecurity talking. It fucking chaps my hide, because I'm not the kind of guy who needs to be reassured at every turn.

At least, I don't want to be that guy.

And I know Liam. I've known him all my life, practically. Or least the parts of it worth mentioning. He's like a father to me, and I know he sees me as a son. He'd never deliberately do anything to hurt me. In fact, he was probably over here talking me up.

It really doesn't surprise me that he's able to interpret my interest in Simon, but he needs to back off of that line of thinking right away. I know what he wants: He wants me to find a mate and settle down like he did, but I'm just not ready for that right now.

"You’re really good with her," Simon says, and there's a reverence in his voice that catches me off guard.

Liam smiles. "Simon's always been good with children."

All right. His game is pretty clear now, and this has gone too far. I don't know if Liam can sense what Simon is, but he doesn't need to broadcast it. It's obvious Simon doesn't know, and just because he's an omega doesn't mean we’re compatible.

Even if my dragon insists we are.

"I figure it’ll pay off eventually.
